RESEARCH POSITIONS

The laboratory provides research experience to a wide range of students, including high school students, psychology and neurobiology undergraduates, medical students, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows in psychology, and neurology fellows.

The focus of the laboratory program on cerebral mechanisms of perception and ocular motor control offers a wide scope of potential projects. Most involve the application of psychophysical techniques to the study of normal subjects and patients with neurologic disorders. We also perform functional (MRI) imaging studies, both at the UBC 3-T system and in collaboration with researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The laboratory has local collaborations with the laboratories of Alan Kingstone (UBC Psychology), Debbie Giaschi (UBC Ophthalmology), and Jim Tanaka (University of Victoria psychology), and long-distance collaborations with Dara Manoach (Harvard Medical School), Max Riesenhuber (Georgetown University), Brad Duchaine (University College of London) and Bruno Rossion (Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium). There is also the potential for collaboration with Todd Handy and Mario Liotti (Simon Fraser University) for studies using evoked potentials, with EEG or MEG. All students will also have access to all neurology and ophthalmology teaching events, and attendance is encouraged, particularly for those with minimal background in patient work.

Periods of study in the laboratory can range from 1-2 months to several years, depending upon the nature of the project. All student/researchers are given the opportunity to participate in study concept and design, and have chief responsibility for data collection and analysis. All students are encouraged to present their studies at conferences and to be primary authors on publications from their studies.
